Session Overview

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.) would like to improve its fundraising strategy through the creation of S.T.O.P. donor personas. Since its inception in 2019, S.T.O.P. has led major victories against harmful surveillance practices. Our method has been effective at countering surveillance and has led to impactful change in the lives of people targeted by surveillance practices. As S.T.O.P. expands its work and capacity to address discriminatory surveillance, we seek new avenues for funding. S.T.O.P.'s has primarily relied on grant funding for development. We are struggling to launch a major gift program and fundraise through individual donors. As a privacy organization, S.T.O.P. is not in a position to target ideal donors via a standard method of purchasing data on potential donors. However, understanding who S.T.O.P.'s ideal donors are and what motivates their support will help us efficiently and successfully fundraise. S.T.O.P. would like to create donor personas and build a privacy-forward market research model for S.T.O.P.'s development team to conduct future donor engagement. The goal of this consultation is to understand the feasibility of this project and the skills, tasks, and approximate time needed to complete it.

S.T.O.P. litigates and advocates for privacy, working to abolish local governments’ systems of mass surveillance.
