
February is Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the vital contributions of Black Americans to our country’s culture and history. From more well-known figures like scientist and inventor George Washington Carver, to lesser-known names, like Phillis Wheatley Peters, the first published African American poet, Black Americans have contributed countless ideas and achievements to American society. Black History Month is an opportunity to spotlight those historic accomplishments and build toward a more equitable tomorrow for all African Americans.
There are many opportunities to contribute to Black communities as a skilled volunteer—below we’ve highlighted organizations with current requests for support on Taproot Plus. We will also be spotlighting these and other projects throughout the month on our social media. We invite you to take a look and find an opportunity to use your skills for good this February:
- Website Design: Seven Hillz Productions Foundation is in need of a volunteer website designer to draft architecture and design concepts for their Wix website. The organization works to diversify the film and entertainment industries by providing educational opportunities and scholarships to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. - Fundraising: Black Catholic Messenger Foundation is currently seeking a development or grant-writing professional to join a one-hour Sessions call to brainstorm ways to jumpstart their fundraising. The organization operates a nonprofit digital publication covering stories of interest to African American Catholics. Learn more about this opportunity.
- Program Design: Healthy Black Families is an organization that works to advance social equity and justice for Black individuals and families. They are looking for assistance on a one-hour Sessions call to strategize how to create a regional grant database to help the organization build a grant-making pipeline for the next 3-10 years. - IT Infrastructure: African Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities works to educate, empower, and engage to improve quality of life for children with disabilities who are at risk of education inequity or system involvement. They are looking to work with a skilled volunteer in a one-hour Session to evaluate replacing their outdated phone system with voice over IP and determine how a new system would integrate into the organization’s existing technology assets. - Social Media: KR Scholars provides current and future Historically Black College and University scholars with scholarships, financial literacy, and workforce readiness programs. They are in need of a volunteer knowledgeable in social media strategy to conduct a comprehensive social media audit, which includes analyzing current strategies, surveying competitors, and reviewing performance across channels.
