We'd like to connect with a skilled volunteer to help us research 10 grant opportunities and develop a proposal template to help us fund a rugged pickup truck to transport Maya students safely from their remote villages to Maya Jaguar Private Technical Institute, a middle and high school campus in Guatemala's western highlands.
Our nonprofit, Adopt-a-Village in Guatemala, functions entirely with uncompensated volunteers, none of whom have grant experience. Grant opportunities some board members have explored over the years don't seem to apply to our education and literacy programs to benefit underserved Maya students in this very remote area of western Guatemala. An experienced grant researcher would be most helpful to help us explore funding options beyond our modest list of private donors.
Because students live in various remote villages, most several hours' drive from campus, we teach, feed, and house them on campus during the school year. Then we transport them back to their villages every month of the school year (January - October). The ruggedness of the unpaved mountainous roads require a new truck every 3 years, plus several sets of replacement tires during the year. In addition to transporting students, these two vehicles are also used for on-campus maintenance and supplies from larger commercial centers.
Toyota HiLux pickup trucks are available in Guatemala, but very expensive (approximately $60,000). We usually try to fund a new truck by trading in the older one for approximately half the purchase price. This is a continuing need every 3-4 years.
