We are looking for a volunteer who can help us to develop our first employee handbook. We're hoping to find a partner with a background in HR and/or operations to improve transparency and accountability by clarifying our employees’ legal rights and our policies, benefits, and other expectations for performance and conduct in a new employee handbook. This project will contain the following activities:

- Work with the TRI team (and our PPO Justworks resource, Mineral) to prompt them and request clarity on developing current policies including developing segmented HR handbook materials and asking any clarifying questions
-Identify policies that we should ensure we include or areas that should be addressed and included
-Present a detailed outline of a new handbook with key question prompts for the TRI team to consider to build the handbook content
-Finalize the handbook after receiving feedback from our team
As a new organization, we hit the ground running in Summer 2024. We have been so focused on program work and must prioritize the development of a handbook. There is, of course, deep interest in codifying our employee benefits and policies among the full team prior to our one-year anniversary and employee reviews starting in April 2025. It is our goal to launch a new HR handbook as well as develop our nascent hiring/management policies (separate project) before June 2024.
To prepare, our Executive Director will oversee the project. We'll provide you with access to Mineral/JustWorks if applicable to create a new Employee Handbook. Please note there are no current policies on file for our staff of 4. The volunteer should expect to spend 15-20 hours over 4-5 weeks.

Organization Mission

Mission The Reading Institute (TRI) develops, implements, and expands the reach of reading science-aligned literacy interventions and professional learning for educators to ensure emergent readers develop the essential building blocks to become successful readers. TRI provides access to effective early literacy interventions and professional development in reading science to in-service and preservice teachers. Specifically, we provide training and programs to current and future educators to benefit emergent readers in predominantly New York City underserved communities by utilizing Reading Ready and Reading Go! evidence-based tutoring programs and our 10-hour Science of Reading Microcredential.
