Licensing Strategy for Digital Music Curriculum

Music for Minors

Music for Minors has developed a proprietary, standards-aligned digital music curriculum for preschool through sixth grade that we believe has strong potential for revenue generation beyond our current in-person model. While we currently deploy this curriculum through direct instruction in over 60 Bay Area partner schools, we are now exploring opportunities to license it for remote use by public school educators, particularly within California.
We are seeking a skilled business strategist to help assess the feasibility and sustainability of monetizing this asset. The strategist will evaluate market demand, competition, cost structures, scalability, and risk. They will also advise on IP protection (copyright, patentability), working with us to understand what’s required to bring the curriculum to market in a licensed format.
This project supports our broader mission: to provide equitable access to high-quality music education for over 20,000 students annually. We aim to expand our reach and impact through a more flexible, portable and sustainable model—especially in schools where we may be the only music education provider.
Our standards-based curriculum focuses on the formative elementary years, crucial for shaping cognitive, social, and emotional development, and paving the way for continued participation in music programs in middle school and beyond. With diminishing school budgets, many students from low-income families lack access to arts education, which is proven to boost educational and career outcomes.
This work will include:
• Assessing the curriculum’s market readiness and value proposition
• Advising on necessary legal protections (copyright, patent)
• Developing a pricing model that ensures sustainability and access
• Establishing financial goals for this new revenue stream
• Outlining a strategy that covers production, support, training, marketing, and personnel costs
To date, we've invested approximately $1.5M in developing and maintaining the curriculum. Our current in-person delivery model—heavily subsidized for under-resourced Title I schools—is not financially sustainable in the long term. Licensing presents an opportunity to create a higher-ROI, scalable revenue stream that complements our existing services.
The strategist will collaborate with our Director of Curriculum, IT Specialist, Interim ED, and other team members, including the Director of Technical Solutions and Program Managers. We will provide access to detailed financial data, program budgets, pricing models, contracts, and relevant internal analyses.
