We are seeking a skilled volunteer to help us develop a focused fundraising strategy and outreach toolkit to strengthen our donor engagement efforts. The volunteer will collaborate with our team to create a clear, actionable fundraising framework and materials we can use beyond this project.

Deliverables will include:
-A concise written fundraising strategy outlining key goals, target audiences, and recommended tactics
-A prioritized donor prospecting list with 10–15 potential funders or partners
-A short donor outreach toolkit, including a sample pitch deck, email templates, and talking points
-Recommendations for follow-up and relationship-building practices our team can implement
This project will directly support the campaign to save UNC Asheville’s 45-acre urban forest by enabling targeted fundraising for outreach and advocacy. Volunteer guidance will increase our ability to mobilize donors so we can save this forest from destruction. An intact forest protects wildlife and plant habitat, provides much-needed stormwater mitigation (especially following the massively destructive hurricane we experienced one year ago), carbon sequestration, and maintains community resilience and quality of life.

For more background on this project, read on:
We are a fiscally sponsored grassroots organization in Asheville N.C. working to stop the destruction of one of the city's last remaining urban forests. The land is "owned" by the University of North Carolina-Asheville. They want to raze the forest (20,000 + mature trees and habitat to bears, owls, over 100 species of birds, bats, and more) and develop it into a 5,000-seat soccer stadium, market-rate housing, and retail using a public-private partnership model. The development would be inserted into a quiet neighborhood called 5-Points, one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in Asheville.
There are a lot of problems with this proposed development all of which are detailed on our website at www.saveuncawoods.org.
Details will be provided during volunteer interviews. Our small organizing team will collaborate closely, share existing background materials, schedule regular working sessions, and welcome brief follow-up check-ins during implementation so recommendations can be adapted in real time.

Organization Mission

UNC Asheville’s 45-acre urban forest has been a cherished community resource and wildlife habitat for decades. It’s now under threat of development, despite its status as one of the last remaining urban forests in Asheville. The university plans to replace the forest with a 5,000 seat soccer stadium, market rate housing and retail. The development would indelibly alter the adjacent neighborhoods due to increased traffic, noise and light pollution. In September 2025 our county (Buncombe County) experienced the loss of or damage to 40% of its trees due to Hurricane Helene. This estimate doesn't even cover the loss of trees within urban settings such as the city of Asheville, due to difficulty assessing urban areas. It's estimated that nearly 822,000 acres of forest were damaged or destroyed across Western North Carolina due to storm Helene. The City of Asheville had already sustained an estimated 6.4% loss of its canopy between 2008 and 2018 — a loss of 891 acres of trees according to the Urban Tree Canopy Study. Tree cover also affects disaster resilience and trees play a vital role in our stormwater system. This 45-acre mature urban forest absorbs rainwater, provides carbon sequestration and lowers our heat island index. We are a small but mighty group of organizers, most of whom work full time, fighting to save this forest from destruction and replacing it with impervious surface that will be ecologically devastating to the area. We are seeking pro bono assistance with fundraising.
