Session Overview

We need guidance in deciding how, when, and in what order to ramp up our marketing and PR and defining workable projects that Taproot Plus volunteers could help execute.

The Sustainable Gardening Institute https://www.sustainablegardeninginstitute.org/ is an all-volunteer organization. Our core program, the Sustainable Gardening Library https://sgi-gardenlibrary.maps.arcgis.com/home/index.html, has reached critical mass and we want to start promoting it in a big way. The Library's content is supplied by experts at approximately 100 collaborating organizations: Public Gardens, Universities, and Government Agencies. We'd like to figure out a way to build a community around these collaborators, so that we stay connected to them and begin to connect them to one another.

We'd also like to start reaching our other target audiences. Two of our board members have experience in traditional marketing (collateral and direct mail) and PR and we have well-defined, targeted audiences, lots of pieces that can be re-purposed, an online media kit, a FB page with 600+ followers, and we regularly post to a number of garden-related FB groups. We have TW and Instagram accounts, as well as a Google AdGrant, but don't currently use them.

We expect to have a full-time college (volunteer) intern for about 2.5 months over the summer and would like to make the best use of his time with us.

Nonprofit Overview

The Sustainable Gardening Institute spearheads a variety of educational and outreach activities that advance public understanding of sustainable gardening, agricultural, and infrastructure practices and their impact on the environment. SGI promotes the exchange of that information between and among horticultural education organizations, colleges and universities, government agencies, media channels, and the public.

We're changing the way people garden and farm, because our survival depends on it.

Our core program, The Sustainable Gardening Library is an online centralized, easy-to-use, authoritative resource on how to create gardens and landscapes using design, growing, and maintenance techniques that are more Earth-friendly than traditional methods. Its content is provided by top-notch public gardens and arboreta, colleges and universities, and government agencies.
