Guidance on Becoming a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit in Wisconsin

We are a statewide Alliance of people working in, using, or supporting harm reduction services throughout Wisconsin. We're in the early stages of becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and are looking for guidance on how to navigate this process effectively.

With funding through a fiscal sponsor, we’re preparing to establish a website and file IRS Form 1023-EZ in 2025. In this session, we’re seeking advice from someone familiar with the 501(c)(3) application process—ideally with experience in Wisconsin—who can offer input on key steps to take, what to prepare, and how to move forward with confidence.

We’d especially appreciate insight on:

-Reviewing or shaping bylaws and basic organizing documents
-Suggestions for completing Form 1023-EZ
-Common pitfalls or considerations when establishing a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity

Legal or nonprofit formation experience is preferred, but we welcome input from anyone who has been through this process and can help us get started on the right track.
