Turn Up Her Mic is in need of grant writers who are familiar with and passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion - especially in arts and entertainment. Though we have a few grants we'd like to apply to, we need more guidance on which grants to apply for, and of course the grant writing process itself.
This project is our pilot-turned-flagship Summer Mentorship program. It is a 6-week curriculum where young, pre-professional women experience weekly mentorship sessions with a designated industry veteran. Mentors have performed and worked with Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Keith Urban, Janelle Monaé, Alejandro Sanz, and more. Aspiring young women receive mentorship in professions where women are the minority; music direction, touring/session musicianship, tour management, live sound, and more.
Although 2021 was our pilot program, 78 young women applied from seven countries. Ultimately, 13 mentees were chosen to participate from five countries.
After a successful pilot program, we are launching the official program this summer (2022). Mentors volunteered their time for the 2021 program, but are convinced that they would show a higher level of dedication if they were paid for their expertise. We hope that the right grant(s) would help boost our program.

One of our most important missions as a 501(c)3 is to increase gender diversity in the music industry. We believe that the potential to do so lies mostly in the next generations of upcoming professionals. That's why this program is our priority and flagship. Through the pilot program, we've witnessed the transformation and empowerment of young women from the next generation of music industry pre-professionals. The encouragement, professional skills, and network gained from this program have proven to us that this program is necessary in the current climate.
To provide some context, we've included some data:
*Of 28 major concert tour films made in the last 15 years, only 2 used female music directors (7%). Both were from Beyoncé's, who openly advocates for gender diversity in music
*Of 24 major concert tour films made in the last 15 years, 37 out of 128 touring musicians (excluding the artist) credited were women (29%). 25 of those 37 women were from Beyoncé's band (who consistently tours with an all-female band). Excluding musicians from the 3 Beyoncé films, only 5/94 musicians were women (5%)

Clearly, the live music industry is in need of more representation from gender minorities.

If volunteering to contribute to this program, you would leave knowing that young women would get their foot in the door of the live music industry, therefore increasing gender diversity - one young woman at a time.

Three tiers of budgets have been made for the Summer Mentorship Program based on how much funding we could potentially receive.

To appeal to grant funders, we have gathered data about the effectiveness of the program surveyed from mentors and mentees. We have also gathered testimonies from several mentees about the impact this program had on their career development.

We are not very familiar with the timeline in which grants should be secured, or the grant writing process in general. Any guidance in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Funds will be used directly to pay mentors for their time and expertise. Depending on how much we can secure from grants, we would also like to pay the industry veterans for weekly masterclasses.

Turn Up Her Mic is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization highlighting the experiences and career paths of women working in the live music industry - touring musicians, music directors, tour managers, and more. We create platforms of awareness, dialogue, and opportunity that inform, encourage and increase the number of women in live music. Through informative panels, mentorship programs, and online initiatives, Turn Up Her Mic provides a community to women who are underrepresented in live music with similar aspirations, goals, and interests.
